Street 3-0 Fleet Town
A perfect start for the Cobblers in their first ever Southern League match.
The Cobblers started the match with a high tempo and nearly had a dream start when in the first minute Craig Herrod capitalised on a defensive mistake to storm through but the Fleet keeper pulled off a stunning save to keep the scores level. The early stages was all one way traffic and the Street faithful didn't have to wait long to witness the Cobblers first Southern League goal which was scored on 8 mins when the dangerous Herrod latched onto a Steve Murray flick on to cut in from the left and squeeze a shot in at the near post.
The Cobblers kept pressing looking for a second with O'Hare and Murray both being denied by an inform Fleet keeper who was keeping their team in the game. On 23 minutes a bizarre passage of play saw the Fleet keeper lead a charmed lift as he twice brought down Murray, the first time outside the box and received a yellow card, the second time was inside the box which the referees immediately awarded a penalty and reached for the red to send the keeper off however Murray had been flagged offside so the decision was rescinded and the keeper was lucky to remain on the pitch. Fleet's best chance of the game came on 34 minutes when a dangerous cross was flicked just wide of the near post. The Fleet keeper then pulled off some excellent saves to keep the score at 1-0 but couldn’t stop a deserved 2nd on 43 minutes when a Short free kick from the right was met by a Murray header which the keeper again superbly saved but captain Ben Amghar was waiting to pounce and lashed in the keeper's parry. The second half started with another early goal when a corner from the left found its way to Murray who held off his man and turned to find the roof of the net from 8 yards. Street kept pressing but again the Fleet keeper pulled off some more superb saves to keep it 3-0. The Cobblers saw out the game without being troubled to record a win on their Southern League debut. A great start to the campaign with 3pts and a clean sheet and with the results coming in the Cobblers find themselves 2nd the table. A big thanks to Fleet Town and we wish them all the best for the season ahead, also thanks to the 193 fans who came to support on a great day for the club.
