Match Report Street 3-0 Bridgwater Town

Solid derby performance maintains winning league start.

The Cobblers made it 2 wins out of 2 in the Toolstation Western League beating local rivals Bridgwater Town 3-0 at the Tannery last night. On a beautiful summer's evening a crowd of 206 came to watch an intriguing contest. The opening 30 minutes were a tight affair with both teams sizing each other up with the only notable chances falling to man of the match Craig Herrod who made the keeper work from a corner and a few minutes later when played in by Murray shot just wide. The opening goal of the match came on 34 minutes when a Bridgwater clearance was headed powerfully back into their half by Matt Hurley, this released Craig Herrod who skinned the Bridgwater defender for pace before picking his spot with a neat flick into the far corner.

The second half again started cagily with both teams creating some half chances but neither goal keepers were tested. Then on 62 minutes the moment of the match and a goal that will live long in the memory of the Tannery faithful, after good work down the right by Josh Bennett his dangerous cross was cleared but only to the feet of Herrod who after what initially appeared like an uncharacteristic heavy first touch let rip from 25 yards with an absolute rocket which soared past the Bridgwater keeper and crashed in off the underside of the bar, fans of both teams applauded this fine effort. With a 2 goal cushion Street looked comfortable and a 3rd goal came on 72 minutes when the twisting and turning Steve Murray was brought down in the box, Murray duly stepped up and smashed the penalty home to make stretch his scoring streak to all 4 games so far this season. The end of the match saw Bridgwater create their best chances of the match but Tom Punchard was equal to their efforts and protect the clean sheet that would equally please the management.

The club would like to thank match sponsors Roger Palmer and Clive Kemmish.

Next up for the first team is an FA Cup tie away to Bridport Town on Saturday 19th August. The reserves make the short trip to Somerton Town tonight with a 6.30pm KO.

Up the Cobblers!
