Street win through in league cup
It was raining goals at the Viridor Stadium this evening as a Phil Ormrod hat-trick helped Street safely through to the next round. With Saturday's FA Cup games in mind, both teams made sweeping changes to their starting line ups but it was the Cobblers who ran out comfortable winners in a highly entertaining game.
After a cagey opening period it was Street that opened the scoring after 15 minutes when a corner was whipped in by Craig Herrod and Scott Thomas rose highest to thump his header past Llyod Irish. Minutes later the pace and skill of Josh Wadham drew a foul in the box and Ormrod made no mistake from the resulting penalty to make it 2-0. The dangerous Ormrod then hit the bar with a lobbed finish with Harry Foster inches away from converting the rebound.
On 38 minutes it was 3-0 when Olly Morris slid a through ball into the path of Herrod who curled a delightful effort into the far corner. Taunton remained in the game just before half time when Rocky Neal found himself one on one and chipped a great finish past Joe Moore.
Straight after the restart Lewis Tasker found space on the left and his tremendous delivery into the box was finished off by Ormrod who had lost his marker. On the hour mark Moore pulled off a terrific double save from Craig Veal when he found himself one on one but couldn't find the back of net despite two attempts at goal. Street introduced Connor Townsend Jakob Dickens and Kyle Strange with all boys impressing on their competitive first team debuts.
Neal scored his second of the game with 15 minutes left to make it 4-2 when a ball over the top caught out the Street defence and he finished past Moore. It was game over on the 80 minute mark when Dickens lobbed a through ball into the path of Ormrod who made no mistake as he fired past Irish to complete a great hat-trick. A great run by Strange then set up the impressive Lewis Waldy but his effort was palmed away and Dickens had a late left footed volley flash just wide as Street finished the game strongly.
Thank you Taunton Town for their warm hospitality and good luck for the rest of the season.
