Street seal promotion after thrilling comeback

A quite remarkable afternoon at the Tannery Ground saw Street promoted to the Southern League and are now just 1 point away from lifting the Western League Premier Division title. It’s now 25 games won on the bounce for the Cobblers but had to come from 2-0 down at half time to keep this amazing record going. Street’s 4th game in 8 days certainly showed in the opening stages as Cribbs started the brighter and took the lead after 10 minutes on the clock with an excellent lobbed finish. Street regrouped and started dictating possession but their final ball often letting them down. Dave O’Hare flashed over from the edge of the box with chances few and far between. Cribbs obviously hadn’t read the script before the game when they made it 2-0 with an effort from close range, seconds after a thunderous Harry Foster volley had crashed against the bar.

It possibly looked a game too far for the Cobblers following such a challenging schedule but this side has proven time and time again this season that they don’t know when they are beat. Manager Rich Fey made 3 positive substitutions at the break bringing on Craig Herrod, Steve Murray and Lewis Waldy which helped stage a quite brilliant comeback and swing the game in Street’s favour. From the kick off Street instantly won a corner which was whipped in by Josh Wadham and it was skipper Ben Amghar who rose highest to plant his header into the top corner. The crowd could see the Cobblers were in the ascendancy as they launched wave after wave of attacks on the Cribbs goal. It was all square on 52 minutes when a high ball into the box was powerfully flicked on by O’Hare and Murray turned sharply in the box to fire in.

A devastating spell of football was rewarded with a third goal on the hour mark when Waldy chased down a Cribbs defender to steal possession and hammered his effort past the keeper which sent the Tannery faithful wild, what a noise! Street’s controlling of games in these situations has been a feature of their season and this was no different as they pinned Cribbs in their own half for long periods. Chances for Murray, Wadham and Lewis Tasker all went wide of the mark during the last 20 minutes as Street ran down the clock to great affect to see out the game and claim a quite brilliant 3 points. Massive well done to Rich, Nath, the players plus everyone who has worked so hard behind the scenes to make this happen. What an achievement. Now let’s go and grab the title! Up the Cobbs.
